Las Vegas Testing

Jeff Gordon and many other drivers tested this week at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the first No-Bull 5 race of the season. Of all the regular Winston Cup drivers, Jeff, Dale Earnhardt, Kenny Wallace, Joe Nemechek, and Terry Labonte will be teamed up with fans to win the No-Bull Million Dollar bonus.

Many Winston Cup and Grand National teams are testing this weekend at Las Vegas to try out the new (read: better) Goodyear tires and try to figure out this relatively new track.

Temperatures were cold at the desert speedway, and many drivers and team members donned parkas to keep warm. But soon the track was warmed by the heat of Winston Cup competition.

On Monday, January 29th, the first of two days of testing for Jeff Gordon and the team, Jeff turned the 5th fastest lap of the day at 168.214 mph. Other speeds from the first day, in order of speed, are: Sadler (169.8332 mph), Houston (169.242), Jerry Nadeau (169.136), Joe Nemechek (168.324), Jeff Gordon (168.214), Ricky Craven (168.193), Bobby Hamilton (167.333), Brendan Gaughan (166.651), Mark Martin (166.400), Kenny Wallace (166.266), Dale Earnhardt (165.193), Mike Skinner (164.755), Terry Labonte (164.674) and Kurt Busch (163.127).

On the second day of testing, the largest day of NASCAR testing ever west of the Mississippi (24 Winston Cup teams), NASCAR decided to do a mini-test session.

NASCAR officials were on hand to experiment with some possible aerodynamic adjustments that may be made before the teams return to Las Vegas for the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400. Drivers Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, Jerry Nadeau and Nemechek tried different components to affect the aerodynamics of the cars.

"We are trying to see what different things will do in certain situations," said NASCAR Winston Cup Series Director of Gary Nelson. "We will try some more things (Wednesday), and then we'll talk to the drivers and process the information and see what all we learned."

Here is a complete rundown of Tuesday's testing speeds for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series cars: Todd Bodine (169.237 mph), Joe Nemechek (169.104), Mark Martin (168.887), Rusty Wallace (168.025), Ron Hornaday (167.957), Mike Skinner (167.650), Kurt Busch (167.416), Brendan Gaughan (167.406), Robert Pressley (167.131), Bobby Hamilton (167.017), Kenny Wallace (166.909), Jerry Nadeau (166.113), Michael Waltrip (166.082), Elliott Sadler (166.047), Jeff Gordon (165.980), Dale Earnhardt (165.634), Ricky Craven (165.406), Jeremy Mayfield (165.350), Ricky Rudd (164.684), Terry Labonte (164.604), Andy Houston (164.274), Dale Jarrett (164.244), Robby Gordon (164.194) and Ryan Newman (164.089).
