Well it was
another wall banging action weekend at "The track
too tough to tame", Darlington. Kurt Busch sat on
the front row, with Jeff Gordon in second position.
The first caution of the day came out at Lap 54
during pitting when Ron Hornaday's left front tire
went down, and for Michael Waltrip hitting the
wall. The second caution of the day came out on lap
75, and involved Dale Earnhardt, Jr. spinning Hut
Stricklin. Kurt Busch took the lead after pit
stops. On lap 118 Jason Leffler dropped out of the
race for overheating problems. They went racing
until lap 138 when Dave Blaney hit the wall. It
went caution free until lap 179 when Elliot Sadler
hit the wall and Dale Earnhardt Jr. spun Stacy
Compton around. The fifth caution was for Stacy
Compton crashing off of turn four and going behind
the wall. Kurt Busch's good day ended on lap 276
when he cut his tire on some debris. The 8th
caution was on lap 327 when Elliott Sadler had
trouble in turn four. Is this the evil and mean
corner or what? Turn four struck again on lap 357
for a multi-car accident, bringing out caution
number ten. Robert Pressley got bumped by Terry
Labonte and hit the inside wall hard, and he almost
flipped the car. JimmySpencer also got loose during
this and hit Johnny Benson. Also, Ron Hornaday
hitJoe Nemechek. The race at this point was red
flagged so they would be able to get some green
laps in for the checkered. Ward Burton took of on
the restart and won the race under caution. Gordon
passed Bobby Labonte on the outside coming to the
caution/checkered flag, finishing
second.
