-Qualifying
Jeff Gordon was
the 2nd driver to earn the pole position, but wound
up in the 28th starting spot by the time qualifying
was over. It'll be an all K-mart front row, with
Todd Bodine and Jimmy Spencer in the first two
starting positions.
-Race
True
champions stand in the face of adversity, and can
make the most out of a bad situation. The #24 team
had to do that once again this weekend, as a new
track took it's toll on many race cars.
Gordon had one of
the top cars on Sunday afternoon, and had worked
his way from 28th all the way to 4th with 15 laps
to go. He looked like the only real competition for
dominant Kevin Harvick, but all of a sudden he
started backsliding through the field. Engine
failure was the obvious answer, and the DuPont crew
figured that the engine was only running on seven
cylinders.
The tenth and final
caution of the day came out on lap 258, 9 laps from
the end, for Tony Stewart's crash. When racing
restarted Gordon's car was only good enough for
17th place, the last car on the lead
lap.
Due to Gordon's
17th place finish, Dale Jarrett now has caught up
to Jeff Gordon in the points standings. They are
tied for the Winston Cup Points lead and tied for
number of wins, but by virtue of Gordon's higher
number of second place finishes, he will retain the
official points lead heading to New
Hampshire.
"I'm just thrilled
to beat Todd (Bodine). We were outrunning him on
the racetrack, but it was a tough day. We fought
hard today to get from way back there in the field
to the front. All we needed was a little bit better
track position. We had one of the fastest cars out
there. I'm real proud of these guys with the Dupont
race team. We've got to figure it out and make sure
it doesn't happen any more. We're going through a
tough time now, but as long as we're tied for the
points lead, we'll take that."
"I'm looking
forward to Loudon and to every track we race at.
But right now, I'm going to focus on our test
session in Indianapolis coming up on Monday and
Tuesday. And then we'll gear up. The guys at the
shop are working hard getting us ready for New
Hampshire. We've got to do something there. We've
got to make up a little bit of the ground that we
lost here."
