Protection One
400 -
Kansas
Speedway
-Race Report
By: Kelly Morris
Jeff Gordon started
second in the Protection One 400 at the new Kansas
Speedway next to pole sitter Jason Leffler. As soon
as the race started, the action got hot and heavy.
In the first turn of the first lap there was a
multi car accident involving Casey Atwood, Ricky
Craven and John Andretti. Jeff escaped this wreck
and this would be the one of many that he would
dodge throughout the day.
Gordon had
a solid top five car all day and
challanged for the lead early and often.
All throughout the race the team made many
adjustments to the Dupont Chevy making it
like the tornado that swept through Kansas
in the Wizard of Oz. With 38 laps to go,
the leader Rusty Wallace lead all the lead
lap cars down pit road for the final stop
of the day. Wallace got out first but was
caught speeding which gave the lead to
Ricky Rudd. On the restart Gordon charged
from third to first passing Rudd and Mark
Martin and went on to win the
race!!!

Gordon has
won 3 inaugural events.

This was Gordon's
sixth win of the 2001 season and is his 58th career
win. This win was special not only to Gordon but to
a young man named Matt Dahl, the son of the pilot
of flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania. One of
his dreams was to meet Gordon and that dream came
true this weekend in Kansas. Gordon also extended
his points lead to 222 over Ricky Rudd. Overall it
was a spectacular weekend for Jeff Gordon and
company at the brand new Kansas Speedway. Next week
the head home to Charlotte for the 500 mile race at
Lowes Motor Speedway.
